Voice & Tone

At TaxSlayer, we aim to create a consistent message and sentiment with our content across all our channels. All the content we publish should educate and guide the user.

UI Voice

The TaxSlayer UI voice is defined by its clarity and directness. It presents information concisely, prioritizing straightforward and efficient communication. This approach favors a formal tone, avoiding contractions and casual expressions.

Our UI voice is written to inform, not to entertain. Most UI content will be written from the second-person perspective, structuring sentences to intuitively include “you” without explicitly stating it. This method ensures text remains focused on actions and instructions, providing users with a clear and professional guide through their tax preparation process.

In essence, the voice of the TaxSlayer UI is like a trusted advisor – knowledgeable, direct, and respectful, ensuring users navigate their tax preparation with confidence and ease.

Brand Voice

Using active voice typically makes content more clear than passive voice. Use active voice whenever applicable. Use common sense – if a sentence can’t be rewritten, or the timeliness of the piece calls for passive voice, do not force the sentence into active voice.

Use short words and sentences. Avoid unnecessary modifiers.

Stick to the copy patterns and style points outlined in this guide.

We strive to write for all audiences. The grade level generally accepted for all reading levels is grade 7. We use the range of grade 6-8 when writing all content for TaxSlayer.

It is important to avoid political or personal bias in our content. Present all information from a factual perspective, not as opinions or advice.

Alt Text

Please Note: The TaxSlayer UI is distinct from the voice of the brand. It is possible for the voice of the brand to interrupt the TaxSlayer UI. For example, an upsell modal interrupts the user’s flow, but will be written in the voice of the brand, as that is more appropriate for marketing and upsell communications.
